Daily Gratitude: August edition

  • Tuesday July 29, 2014: I was able to use the fitness room at our apartment for a good weight workout (including arms/shoulders which is HUGE for me considering all the shoulder issues I have had)
  • Wednesday July 30, 2014: I had a great visit with not only my district manager, but also a regional manager at work
  • Thursday July 31, 2014: I got some yummy home grown tomatoes from one of my technicians
  • Friday August 1, 2014: I started off a new month with a workout and some cleaning
  • Saturday August 2, 2014: HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to both my daddy and my niece Ainsley!!!
  • Sunday August 3, 2014: FINALLY the pool has opened at our apartment so we got to enjoy it today! Plus Chase and I met his dad for dinner, which was nice.
  • Monday August 4, 2014: Happy anniversary to Briix–to celebrate we took advantage of their buy one get one free pizza offer for dinner!
  • Tuesday August 5, 2014: I switched up our usually “Taco Tuesday” dinner by using ground turkey and Chase still said it was good!
  • Wednesday August 6, 2014: I got to spend some time with a grad intern at work today–its always fun for me to help others learn
  • Thursday August 7, 2014: Yay for being off work! I throughly enjoyed my time today
  • Friday August 8, 2014: Although work was super busy today, I am proud of myself and my technician for how we handled it.
  • Saturday August 9, 2014: One great thing about getting off at 5pm on the weekends is that I can go to the free wine tasting at Winston Salem Wine Market
  • Sunday August 10, 2014: I took advantage of our new pharmacy hours and enjoyed some “me time” this morning before work
  • Monday August 11, 2014: One of my technicians brought in a locally made tres leches cake and it was DELICIOUS!!
  • Tuesday August 12, 2014: I used a living social voucher for a massage that I almost forgot I had!
  • Wednesday August 13, 2014: Chase and I celebrated “taco Tuesday” a day late this week
  • Thursday August 14, 2014: We had a new grad training with us at work today.  It is always nice to have an extra hand!
  • Friday August 15, 2014: Today was an extra shift for me and I plan to use my extra pay to treat myself to something nice
  • Saturday August 16, 2014: I started the morning off with a great Zumba class before heading home to spend some time with my mom and see my brother’s new house
  • Sunday August 17, 2014: I went to church with my Nanny and we had a wonderful time celebrating a 90th birthday at her church
  • Monday August 18, 2014: Chase and I had a date night dinner at Briix
  • Tuesday August 19, 2014: Although work was super busy I feel like we had a very productive day
  • Wednesday August 20, 2014: I spent some time at work finalizing details for our team member events for flu shots.  It is nice to be able to get the loose ends wrapped up
  • Thursday August 21, 2014: I was incredibly lazy this afternoon and I loved every minute of it!
  • Friday August 22, 2014: It is days like these I remember how blessed I am to have a 30 minute lunch break to step away from things
  • Saturday August 23, 2014: Free pizza at work!  Woohoo
  • Sunday August 24, 2014: Again, I am loving our new Sunday hours.  I had time to get some cleaning done before work this morning!
  • Monday August 25, 2014: I took Krispy Kreme donuts to work to welcome our new staff pharmacist—and I didn’t even eat one!
  • Tuesday August 26, 2014: Did you know they make pumpkin spice flavored M&Ms?? I didn’t, but tried them at work and have to say they weren’t too bad
  • Wednesday August 27, 2014: I gave a big thumbs up this morning for a solid night of sleep…much needed for another busy day at work.
  • Thursday August 28, 2014: Today I was reminded that sometimes people can be plain mean, no matter how nice you are to them, and you just have to let it roll off your back
  • Friday August 29, 2014: I have been working on learning (or maybe I should say re-learning) Spanish using the app Duolingo and today one of my technician’s complimented me on my progress!
  • Saturday August 30, 2014: Woohoo for seeing my niece play in her soccer tournament today!
  • Sunday August 31, 2014: Enjoying a lazy Sunday with Chase is a perfect way to end the month of August.  Welcome Fall!

Even though sometimes I forget it is so important to remember to be gracious for your life each and every day! Don’t waste your time looking to the future; enjoy the here and now!

Looking Back

It had been quite awhile since I posted last week so I decided to look through my blog Thursday evening to refresh myself on what I had posted and boy was some of it eye-opening!  Remember those “life changes” I was striving to make and how proud I was of myself when I started?  Well, I think it is time to re-visit those.  My original post listed the life changes I hoped to adopt to make myself a better person and then I broke them down to be a little more manageable here.  With everything that has been going on in my life I pretty much fell off the wagon with all of these and now it is time to hop back on!!

Life Change 1: Wear my FitBit Flex Daily (goal of 10,000 steps daily):

Time to dust this off and charge it up! I plan to charge it today and wear it to work tomorrow.  I haven’t worn my fitbit since starting at Target so I am interested to see how active I am there.

Life Change 2: Track Using MyFitnessPal Daily:

While I definitely think it is a good thing that I have been cooking a lot more lately, it is harder for me to track (mainly because it takes a few more seconds to do—which is NOT a good excuse).  I definitely find it encouraging to have a visual representation of my day so I just need to do it.  Pre-planning will also help make this easier.  So far today I have tracked my breakfast :)

Life Change 3: Eat More Whole Foods/Eat Less Processed Foods:

For me, this is a constant struggle and I am sure it always will be.  I try to make good choices when it just involves me, but when I am cooking at home for me and Chase I don’t always follow this rule.  Plus there is definitely a difference and “his and hers” snacks in our house.  I have recently been really looking at foods to check out ingredients and that is always eye opening.  I need to continue to focus on my individual meals and make changes at home when possible.

Life Change 4: Cook more/including meal prep to be prepared at work:

I talked about this last week in regards to my changing schedule at work.  I know I will have to make this a priority so that I do not slack off when I get off work at 7.  While planning is key it is also going to be important to prep ahead when I can!  I began working on a “new” Pinterest board  for some quick and easy dinners last Thursday to get my ideas flowing!  I also plan to use Sunday afternoon/evening to make my plan for next week!

Life Change 5: Live in the moment–enjoy every single day:

It is so easy to find yourself looking forward to something; whether it be a vacation, holiday, or just the weekend.  It is ok to look forward to exciting things, but don’t forget to enjoy your time in the present.  I think my life is pretty awesome right now and I plan to enjoy it all I can!  A good way to remember this is my daily gratitude post.

  • Thursday August 24, 2014: I was able to look at the first pictures I took with my new camera and I was pleasantly surprised!  I am loving my new camera so far!
  • Friday August 25, 2014: I was able to meet with my new staff pharmacist and I am excited for new changes.
  • Saturday August 26, 2014: Chase and I had a date night at one of our favorite Greek restaurants, Athenas.
  • Sunday August 27, 2014: I got two compliments on my watch at work, which let to two different, but great conversations with my guests at work.
  • Monday August 28, 2014: I had a super productive day at work and was able to take advantage of our last day of overlap to step out and grab lunch!

 

I plan to enjoy the nice weather this afternoon!  I can’t believe that it is 74 degrees at 11:15am in July!  Hopefully I can take some pictures and practice more.  You know what they say–practice makes perfect!!

Speaking of practice here are a few pictures I took yesterday evening.  I tried to focus more on exposure and was happy to see they looked much better when I viewed them on my laptop this morning.

Life Changes: How to be successful

Even though I have chosen to make life changes instead of resolutions I think they can kind of be thought of as the same thing.  One of the main reasons people fail to stick with their New Year’s Resolutions is because they become overwhelmed and then just give up.  The other day before I went to work I saw a great blog post by Anne from Fannetastic Food about how to make a successful New Year’s resolution.  I took a lot away from her post and it really made me realize that even though I want to make life changes that I will follow through and stick with, it is important to not get overwhelmed.

The great thing about New Year’s is that on January 1st you have a clean slate and a chance to start fresh.  That is what I had in mind when I decided on my life changes.  While my life changes are things I hope to stick with forever and especially throughout 2014, I realize it may be more helpful to look at them in a more short term sense.  Looking at how to accomplish my goals on a shorter term basis allows me to change my current habits so I will stick with them in the long run.

Life Change 1: Wear my FitBit Flex Daily (goal of 10,000 steps daily)

So far, so good on this goal.  I think I have already broken it down because I set a daily goal and it is something I can see results from immediately once I log into my FitBit app or my online dashboard.  I am a visual person so this works perfectly for me.

 My biggest challenge is to get my 10,000 steps on days that I don’t work.

So for me a daily/weekly goal for my overall life change would be to focus on getting steps in on days I am not working.  Another thing is to get to the gym to work out on days that I am off or do not go into work until the afternoon (which would be at least 2 days during each week).

Life Change 2: Track Using MyFitnessPal Daily

Again, this is an easy one for me because I visually see what I do on a daily basis.

 I struggle to track when I eat out or do not prepare my meals for home or work.

So for me a daily/weekly goal is to make sure I completely track each day.  If I am not sure of how to track a food I will try to find something close to it to track.

Life Change 3: Eat More Whole Foods/Eat Less Processed Foods:

This is where I could see myself getting overwhelmed so breaking it down into more specific daily/weekly changes will be very helpful.  I did a post last week about what clean eating means for me and how I hope to ultimately change my way of eating.

A daily/weekly goal I want to focus on for the next few weeks is to really take a look at what foods I am putting into my body.  I will avoid foods that contain ingredients I am unfamiliar with and also ones with ingredient lists that contain more than 5 ingredients.  

Life Change 4: Cook more/including meal prep to be prepared at work:

Again, I can definitely see myself getting overwhelmed with this goal.

I used some of my free time Friday to go through a lot of magazines I had laying around and then used my Pinterest to pin all the recipes I found that I would eventually like to try.  Having all these recipes together in one place makes me feel more organized.  Plus I got rid of a ton of magazines so my house isn’t as cluttered.  I also have a ton of cookbooks (which I love), so on Saturday morning I went through a lot of them a used post it note flags to mark all the recipes I am interested in making.  Having an easy way to flip through for recipes will help me as I sit down and plan out my meals and prep.

A daily/weekly goal I will focus on for the next few weeks is to use my day off during the week (either Tuesday or Wednesday) to make a plan, grocery shop, and prepare myself for work.  I will also do some meal prep on other days as needed based on my work schedule. 

Life Change 5: Live in the moment–enjoy every single day

Sometimes I get so caught up in life that I forget to stop and enjoy all the good things and I bet a lot of people can relate.  I think this can lead to a general attitude that people don’t necessarily like.  I am a firm believer that if I exude positivity than so will the people around me.

A daily/weekly goal to help me live in the moment is to do a short recap blog post each week to say something positive from every single day.

I hope breaking down my overall goals will make them stick!

Goodbye 2013. Hello 2014

As 2013 is coming to a close I find myself thinking about how I am going to make 2014 a wonderful year.  I have never been much for making New Year’s resolutions because I always find myself not following through with them.

This year I have decided not to make resolutions, but more life changes that I think will make me an overall better person.

Step one: make a brand new blog (check)

Step two: decide on my life changes

Hello 2014:
